Thousand Palms, California — One person was killed and several others were injured on April 14, 2026, after a semi-truck crossed the center median on Interstate 10 and struck a cement truck in Thousand Palms, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Semi Crosses Median and Enters Westbound I-10 Lanes
The crash was reported at approximately 7:50 a.m. west of Washington Street. CHP investigators said the semi-truck was traveling eastbound when it veered left for unknown reasons, crossed through the center median, and entered the westbound lanes.
Once in the westbound lanes, the semi broadsided a cement truck. The semi then remained perpendicular across the freeway and was struck by a Jeep. Authorities also reported that four vehicles in the eastbound lanes were involved in related crashes as traffic reacted to the initial impact, as reported by KESQ.
Cement Truck Driver Killed, Multiple Patients Taken to Hospital
The driver of the cement truck, a 62-year-old man from Yucca Valley, was pronounced dead at the scene. The semi-truck driver, a 38-year-old man from Menifee, was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center with major injuries.
CHP confirmed that six patients were transported to the hospital with injuries ranging from major to precautionary. The crash caused major traffic delays in both directions of I-10, and all lanes were not reopened until the evening.
Why Median-Crossover Truck Crashes Are So Dangerous
When a semi-truck leaves its direction of travel and crosses a center median, drivers in the opposite lanes usually have little time to understand what is happening. The size and weight of a tractor-trailer can turn a single loss-of-control event into a multi-vehicle crash across both sides of a freeway.
Investigators in median-crossover truck crashes often examine:
- Whether the truck driver was speeding, distracted, fatigued, or impaired
- Whether mechanical failure, tire failure, or cargo shift contributed to the loss of control
- Whether weather, road surface, or lane conditions played a role
- Whether the carrier properly maintained the tractor-trailer
- Whether the roadway design or median barrier provided adequate protection
Because this crash involved vehicles in both directions of travel, investigators will likely review physical evidence from multiple impact points, vehicle data, witness statements, and any available dashcam or traffic-camera footage.
