Tyre, New York — A 16-year-old girl from Clyde who served as a volunteer EMT with her local ambulance corps was killed on April 11, 2026, after her SUV crossed the centerline on Route 414 in Seneca County and struck a northbound tractor-trailer head-on, according to New York State Police.

Chevy Equinox Crosses Centerline at Curve, Hits 1985 Peterbilt Head-On

The crash happened at approximately 8:55 a.m. on State Route 414 in the town of Tyre, Seneca County. State Police Waterloo reports indicate Jaiden Zimmerman, 16, of Clyde, was driving a 2020 Chevrolet Equinox southbound when the vehicle crossed the centerline at a curve and collided head-on with a 1985 Peterbilt tractor-trailer traveling northbound as reported by 13WHAM.

At the wheel of the northbound Peterbilt was a 48-year-old man from Romulus who attempted evasive action before the crash. He wasn’t injured, and the truck passed a post-crash commercial vehicle enforcement inspection with no violations. Zimmerman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Teen Was a Volunteer EMT With North Seneca Ambulance

Zimmerman had been a volunteer with North Seneca Ambulance Corp, a detail that’s drawn an outpouring of grief from the first responder community in Seneca County. She was 16, still in school, already giving time to serve people in medical emergencies as reported by WHEC Rochester.

The Peterbilt was hauling an empty trailer at the time of the crash. State Police confirmed the truck driver cooperated fully with investigators and cleared commercial vehicle inspection.

Route 414 and Rural Highway Risks

Rural two-lane highways like Route 414 in Seneca County don’t have the median barriers that divided highways do. When a vehicle drifts across the centerline from a medical event, a distraction, or loss of control on a curve, there’s nothing to stop a direct head-on collision. Tractor-trailers, even empty ones, carry significantly more mass than a passenger SUV, and the physics of a head-on crash at highway speed leave little margin.

What Investigators Examine in Centerline Crossover Crashes

In crashes where a passenger vehicle crosses into oncoming traffic, key investigative questions include:

  • What caused the driver to leave their lane: mechanical failure, distraction, fatigue, or a medical event
  • Road conditions and whether signage warned of the upcoming curve
  • Whether the truck driver had any opportunity to avoid the crash and what evasive actions were taken
  • Speed of both vehicles relative to posted limits
  • Whether road design contributed to the departure, including lane width, guardrail placement, and sight lines

The investigation is ongoing. State Police haven’t announced a preliminary cause for why the Equinox crossed the centerline.
