Oklahoma City, Oklahoma — An Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper, a 36-year-old woman, and a 4-year-old child were killed on Interstate 35 in Oklahoma City on April 8, 2026, after debris from a commercial truck triggered a chain-reaction crash that sent a vehicle across the median and into oncoming traffic.
Debris From Commercial Truck Sparks Fatal Chain-Reaction Crash
The crash happened at approximately 11:27 a.m. on northbound I-35, between Britton Road and Hefner Road. According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, a commercial truck traveling southbound lost part of its cargo, scattering debris across the roadway.
Mercedes Bayne, 36, was driving a small SUV southbound when she swerved to avoid the fallen debris. Her vehicle crossed the center cable barrier and entered the northbound lanes of I-35, where it struck an OHP patrol vehicle head-on. Bayne, a 4-year-old child riding in her SUV, and the trooper were all pronounced dead at the scene. None of them survived the impact.
Trooper Vernon Brake: Nearly 20 Years of Service
The trooper has been identified as Vernon Brake, a graduate of the 56th OHP Academy in 2006 who’d served the state for close to two decades. He’d been assigned to Logan County and Oklahoma County during his career. Colleagues described him as funny, generous, and someone who “tried to bring joy where he could” throughout his years on patrol.
Brake is survived by his wife and two daughters.
Governor Kevin Stitt issued a statement following the crash: “I want to take a moment to honor the life and service of Trooper Vernon Brake, who was killed in the line of duty today. For nearly 20 years, Trooper Brake served Oklahoma with integrity and dedication, and we are forever grateful for his sacrifice.”
OHP Identifies Truck of Interest After Public Appeal
In the hours after the crash, OHP released a photograph of a truck described as having a white cab and red rig, asking the public for help identifying the vehicle. The OHP Communication Center received tips at 405-425-2323, and investigators later confirmed the truck had been identified thanks to public assistance. The Missouri State Highway Patrol also shared the appeal on their own social media channels as reported by News On 6.
No arrests or charges have been announced. The OHP Traffic Homicide Unit isn’t releasing further details while the investigation continues.
All Lanes of I-35 Closed During Investigation
Both northbound and southbound lanes of I-35 between Britton Road and Hefner Road were shut down for hours while investigators worked the scene. ODOT urged drivers to use alternate routes as reported by KTUL.
Unsecured Cargo and Commercial Truck Liability
Investigators believe the lost cargo was the catalyst for this crash. Under Oklahoma law (Title 47, Section 14-103), vehicles are prohibited from dropping or spilling material onto roadways. Federal regulations under 49 CFR Part 393 Subpart I also require commercial motor carriers to properly secure all cargo.
When debris from a commercial vehicle causes a fatal crash, liability questions can extend to:
- The truck driver who failed to secure the load
- The trucking company responsible for training, supervision, and load inspections
- Third-party shippers or loaders who packaged the cargo
- Vehicle maintenance providers if equipment failure contributed to the lost load
Even when a commercial truck isn’t directly involved in the fatal collision itself, its role in the chain of events can carry significant legal weight. Wrongful death claims in cases like this one can involve multiple parties and extensive federal and state regulatory review.
Tributes Pour In From Across Oklahoma
The Oklahoma Department of Corrections, Oklahoma City Fire Department, and Oklahoma Game Wardens all released statements honoring Brake’s sacrifice. Senator James Lankford offered prayers for the family. An OHP spokesperson said the department was “heartbroken” and focused on supporting Brake’s family as reported by OKC Fox.
