Johnson County, Kansas — A tractor-trailer driver was killed on April 23, 2026, after hydroplaning on Interstate 35 during severe weather and crashing into the post of an overhead highway sign, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.
Tractor-Trailer Hydroplanes on Wet I-35
Investigators identified the driver as 44-year-old Travis Lee Sawyer of Gardner. The Kansas Highway Patrol crash report said Sawyer hydroplaned on the wet highway and lost control of the tractor-trailer near I-35 and Antioch.
The truck struck the post of an overhead interstate sign. The impact caused the sign structure to fall across the highway, closing the southbound lanes for hours while crews removed the sign and cleared the scene, as reported by WIBW.
Crash Occurred During Severe Weather
The crash happened during a period of severe storms in the Kansas City area. Wet pavement, standing water, reduced visibility, and wind can all make a large truck harder to control, especially at interstate speeds.
Hydroplaning occurs when tires lose contact with the road surface and ride on a layer of water. When that happens to a tractor-trailer, the driver may have very limited steering or braking control until traction returns.
Questions Investigators May Review
Severe weather can be a major factor in a crash, but investigators still examine whether the truck was being operated safely for the conditions. A commercial driver is expected to slow down or stop when weather makes continued travel unsafe.
Key issues may include:
- The truck’s speed before it hydroplaned
- Tire condition, tread depth, and maintenance records
- Whether water was pooling on the roadway
- Weather alerts and storm conditions at the time of the crash
- Whether company dispatch or delivery pressure encouraged travel during dangerous weather
Because the crash also brought down an overhead sign, investigators may review roadway infrastructure and impact evidence to understand exactly how the tractor-trailer left its lane and struck the sign support.
