What Happened

Maryland State Police responded shortly before 4 p.m. on August 31, 2026, to eastbound I-70 near Morgan Station Road.

The preliminary investigation indicated that a Genesis sedan struck the rear of an Isuzu box truck, causing the truck to strike a guardrail and overturn.

Box-truck passenger Shakee Ali Davis, 32, died at the scene. The box-truck driver was hospitalized.

The September 1 release described impaired-driving homicide and manslaughter charges against the sedan driver. Those were allegations, not a reported conviction. Lanes were closed for about four hours.

Questions for the Investigation

The rear impact and subsequent rollover should be considered as connected but distinct stages. Vehicle damage, guardrail marks, and electronic recordings may help explain how the truck lost control after contact. This report also illustrates why a truck's involvement does not automatically mean its driver caused a crash. The criminal allegations against another driver should remain separate from the evidence needed for any civil evaluation.

What Investigators May Examine

Commercial vehicle crashes can involve evidence held by the driver, motor carrier, vehicle owner, maintenance providers, public agencies, and other parties. Investigators may compare physical evidence from the scene with records generated before and during the trip.

  • Electronic control module, telematics, and available camera data
  • Driver hours-of-service, dispatch, and qualification records
  • Vehicle inspection, tire, brake, and maintenance histories
  • Roadway measurements, traffic-camera footage, and witness statements
  • Cargo, loading, securement, and carrier safety records when relevant

Why Early Evidence Preservation Matters

Electronic truck data, dispatch messages, surveillance video, and other records may be overwritten or discarded in the ordinary course of business. Roadway debris can also be removed within hours. Prompt preservation requests can help protect information before it disappears.

A complete investigation may identify potentially responsible parties beyond the drivers, but responsibility should not be assumed from an initial news report. The official investigation and preserved evidence are important to determining what happened.

Legal Options After a Serious Truck Crash

People injured in a commercial truck collision may be able to seek compensation for medical expenses, lost income, future care, pain, and other losses. Families who lose a loved one may also have wrongful-death and related claims under applicable state law.

Deadlines and available claims vary by jurisdiction. An attorney can review the facts, identify potentially responsible parties, and take steps to preserve evidence while the investigation continues.
