2 Killed in Fiery Semi-Truck Crash on Simmons Street in North Las Vegas

Read Time: 3 minute(s)

North Las Vegas, Nevada — Two people were killed on April 9, 2026, after a Freightliner semi-truck making a left turn crossed into northbound traffic on Simmons Street and collided with a Dodge Challenger, setting both vehicles on fire, according to the North Las Vegas Police Department.

Semi Makes Left Turn Into Northbound Lanes, Both Vehicles Erupt in Flames

The crash occurred at approximately 4:17 p.m. near Simmons Street and an adjacent industrial complex driveway. NLVPD reports indicate the Freightliner was traveling southbound when its driver initiated a left turn, crossing into the oncoming lanes. A Dodge Challenger heading northbound struck the semi as it crossed the road, and both vehicles caught fire immediately after the collision as reported by FOX5 Vegas.

First responders pronounced both drivers dead at the scene. Neither identity had been released as of initial reporting. Investigators confirmed the crash was caught on surveillance video. That footage is now central to the case.

MCIU Leads Investigation, Gray Tesla Sought as Witness

The North Las Vegas Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit is handling the case. Detectives are looking for the driver of a gray Tesla that was in the area at the time and may have witnessed the collision firsthand as reported by 8NewsNow.

Anyone with information is asked to contact NLVPD directly.

Why Left Turns Are Dangerous for Commercial Trucks

Left-turn crashes are among the deadliest maneuvers for semi-trucks. When a commercial driver misjudges the speed or gap of oncoming traffic, the truck can block multiple lanes at once, leaving other drivers with nowhere to go. At the speeds common near industrial corridors, a high-impact collision between a fully loaded Freightliner and a passenger car doesn’t leave much room for survival. Fire becomes a secondary risk whenever fuel tanks are compromised in the collision.

What Investigators Look at in Truck Left-Turn Crashes

In crashes where a commercial vehicle crosses into opposing lanes, attorneys and investigators typically examine:

  • Whether the truck driver had a clear line of sight before turning
  • The oncoming vehicle’s speed relative to posted limits
  • Driver logs and whether hours-of-service limits were followed
  • Dashcam and surveillance footage showing what happened in the seconds before impact
  • Whether the trucking company’s training addressed left-turn protocols near industrial driveways

Surveillance footage already in investigators’ hands is significant. It can establish liability far more quickly than witness accounts alone. The Tesla driver’s account, if located, could add an independent perspective on who had the right of way.
