Fruit Cove, Florida — A 19-year-old motorcyclist was killed late Wednesday night after a semi-truck driver turned right from the left lane into a shopping plaza on State Road 13, directly into the path of the motorcycle, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Semi Turns Right From Left Lane, Motorcycle Strikes Its Side
The crash happened at approximately 10:09 p.m. on April 8, 2026, on State Road 13 in Fruit Cove, St. Johns County. FHP reports indicate both the motorcycle and the semi-truck were traveling northbound when the semi’s driver, a 61-year-old male from Largo, made a right turn from the left lane into a shopping plaza. The front of the motorcycle struck the right side of the semi as reported by News4Jax.
Paramedics pronounced the motorcyclist dead at the scene. He was a Jacksonville male wearing a helmet. The semi’s driver and a 33-year-old passenger weren’t injured. No charges had been announced as of initial reporting.
Wrong-Lane Turn at Night
Turning right from a left lane is a violation of basic traffic law. On a two-lane highway at night, the maneuver is especially dangerous because a trailing driver in the right lane has no reason to expect the vehicle ahead to swing hard right from the passing lane.
In this case, the motorcyclist couldn’t have anticipated the turn. A semi swinging right from the left lane cuts off the entire lane without warning, and at 10 p.m. with limited road lighting, a rider in the right lane has almost no time to react as reported by First Coast News.
